You will need knowledge in a range of general hypnosis topics, training and practice in specific methods and techniques, and specialty or niche knowledge to become a hypnotherapist. There is a list of these in the PDF guide, "Becoming a Hypnotherapist: The Confidence Equation". See the last page, Appendix A: Topics of Study for Hypnotherapists.

In order to operate your own business as a hypnotherapist, you'll also need basic competency in business skills such as bookkeeping and business banking, office management, business networking and marketing, and business planning and operations. You can also plan to hire other professionals to help you in those areas as well as things like legal help and taxes.

One of the most exciting aspects of being a hypnotherapist is applying it to other health specialities in which you are already trained and certified, or applying it to specialty applications like sports performance, pain control or other special interest you may have.

2009 research revealed that when searching for products and personal services, 83% of shoppers in the USA will search the Internet before checking the phone book. We've been hearing over the last three years that the results from phone book ads have been strongly declining for hypnotherapists. Some blame the economy or believe hypnotherapy is declining as a personal service, but in reality, all that really changed is that people shop differently for personal services now.

Still, the Internet is a boggling and complex thing. Internet marketing is the new "get rich quick" peddle, and thousands of people claim to be selling you the secrets to it.

For those latter times, using natural trance reference states to quickly bring your client into a nice, natural trance can be the key to truly "being hypnotic" and creating impromptu inductions that are extremely effective with the subject.

No need to memorize scripts or repeat patter-sounding lines with this technique. Create an induction using an introductory framing, a few key questions, a few blending methods and close observation of the subject.

A little more about YouTube

Let me guess: there are more than a few books on your shelf (or online books) that you have wanted to read that would help you professionally, but it is a challenge to find the time. Or, even if you find the time, it is tough to keep treading through it, chapter by chapter, learning everything from it that you could be learning.

What would help is to have a learning buddy. People learn better in groups, and more reading gets done if you are reading and discussing things chapter-by-chapter and week-by-week in an informal yet organized group.

We call them study groups. Here's how they work:

• Choose from the study groups listed. Each is organized around a book or course and already has an organized study plan and study question set.


• Sign up for as many or as few study groups as you like. When a group has enough members (whatever the minimum, as required by the group setting), everyone will be notified and the study group will start. You can specify how many study groups you can be in at once, so once you are in an active group, the system will automatically keep you from being in another group starting up until your present group is finished.


• Read the chapter each week and come online to answer the week's question. You'll be able to see the answers from your study buddies, and leave comments, discussion and feedback. Optionally, attend the weekly chat session or voice conference call.


• Automatic email reminders can be sent to you to help you stay on track and remember group time.


• When you have completed the book, you'll optionally receive a certificate for continuing education hours. Print a certificate from your computer for free, or get a paper certificate mailed to you for a small fee.


• AAPH are available for technical support or questions about the study groups during normal business hours.

AAPH offers continuing education events and classes for hypnotherapists in both hypnosis skills and business skills. Some are free to members, others are subsidized by AAPH to be very low cost to members.

As professional hypnotherapists, we always want to know more about the studies and research involving hypnosis, as well as more about how the medical industry is progressing in its use and applications of hypnosis.

HypnosisAndSuggestion.org is an excellent resource for researching more about the medical side of hypnosis, consisting of grouping citations and studies together by topic. A few hours of browsing this site will familiarize you with many of the studies mentioned in press articles. If you ever have doctors asking you for resources about medical hypnosis, giving them this site is a great start.

Some of the actual texts of the studies and the journals linked require membership or subscription, and all of the organizations on the links pages require state-licensing in the medical or mental health field in order to join (so, doctors, nurses, social workers, etc. with current credentials).

This is a great place to read up on studies and the structure of studies, and a smart place for the professional hypnotherapist to spend some time learning.
